Direct Loans

The U.S. Department of Education offers low-interest loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) to eligible students to help cover the cost of college or career school. Check .

Loan Types

Awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. Interest is deferred while the student is enrolled in school on at least a half-time basis and during the grace period. Only undergraduate students are eligible for Subsidized Loans.

Available to undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Interest on a unsubsidized loan starts accruing immediately and any unpaid interest is added to your loan balance through a process called capitalization, increasing the total amount you owe.

Federal Direct Loans have annual and lifetime borrowing limits set by the Department of Education. Graduate students can learn more about annual loan limit changes and legacy provisions on our Graduate Students financial aid page.

Complete These Steps

Your Offer will show if you were awarded a subsidized or unsubsidized loan, based on the 

. Visit Banner>Student Menu>Financial Aid Menu> Your Financial Aid Offer. Choose the relevant aid year and go to the "Accept Award Offer" tab. A drop down menu will follow the loan(s) you've been awarded. Click "Accept" to accept and utilize your loan(s). 

  • If you do not wish to use your loan(s), click "Decline" to cancel the loan(s).

 If you are a first-time borrower of subsidized or unsubsidized loans:

Go to  to complete your MPN. You will only need to sign once for all Direct Loans you borrow at SPU.

Complete at . During entrance counseling you will learn what a direct loan is, how the process works, your rights and responsibilities as a borrower, how to manage your educational expenses, and learn about other financial resources that may help pay for your education.

Eligibility requirements 

  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 credits undergraduate / 3 credits graduate).
  • Making satisfactory academic progress.     

Federal loan changes

Starting July 1, 2026:

New lifetime loan limit

  • Total federal loan limit: $257,500
  • Includes all federal loans (undergraduate + graduate)

Loan proration (new)

  • Loan amounts will be based on your enrollment level
  • You must be enrolled at least half-time
  • If you take fewer credits, your loan eligibility will be reduced proportionally 

We are awaiting final federal guidance on exact proration details.

Legacy provision (graduate)

Graduate and professional students who meet BOTH of the following criteria may continue to borrow under the current loan structure for up to 3 additional years or for the remainder of their current published program length, whichever is shorter.

  • Students enrolled in the same credential program before July 1, 2026
  • Students who have previously borrowed a federal loan for that program
