May 13: Annual Perkins Lecture with Elizabeth Perkins

V. Elizabeth Perkins, co-president of the , will give SPU's annual Perkins Lecture on Tuesday, May 13, 11:10 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The Perkins Lecture, named after John M. Perkins in conjunction with SPU’s John Perkins Center, is now in its 19th year. The center is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Perkins Foundation and ɬÀï·¬ Pacific.

May 16: Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference

The Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference is Friday, May 16, 4–7:30 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall. The conference, in its 23rd year, showcases student research and design projects from biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, engineering, health & human performance, and psychology. The conference will begin with a keynote address from Dr. Erica Glasper, a neuroscientist at The Ohio State University. Her talk is titled “Faith as a Compass: Navigating a Lifelong Career in Neuroscience." Please see the Erickson Conference website for the full schedule of events. All are welcome!

The SPU Art Department presents the This culmination of study features individual projects by students Kayla Davenport, Sarah Collier, and Emily Larson in a variety of media including photography, digital illustration, painting, and drawing. The exhibit runs through Friday, May 16.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

A message from Student Counseling, Health, and Wellness: SCHW would like to share how we’re celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month (May). All month, we will have sidewalk signs outside of Watson Hall which will include mental health information and small actionable steps we all can take to improve our mental health. We will also be offering free giveaways every Wednesday! In addition, we’ll host therapy dogs with Paws to De-Stress on Wednesday, May 14, 12–1 p.m. in the SUB Gazebo Room, and we’ll host a special event called Hoppy Hour (with bunnies!) on Demaray Hall lawn on Wednesday, May 28, 4–7 p.m.

The SPU Music Department ends the academic year with a concert featuring musicians from all ensembles. Hear works performed by Concert Choir, Treble Choir, the SPU Orchestra, and special features by student instrumental and composition competition winners. The program truly celebrates the best of the SPU Music Department. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church, adjacent to campus.

Celebration of Service
Celebration of Service honorees, Faculty and Staff of the Year

The 2025 Celebration of Service held on May 8 honored faculty and staff who reached special milestones for years of service (five, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30) and the faculty and staff of the year winners.

Alissa Walter, associate professor of history, was named Undergraduate Professor of the Year by the Associated Students of ɬÀï·¬ Pacific.
Tamura Turney, instructor of marriage and family therapy, was named Graduate Faculty Member of the Year by graduate students.
Josh Kanehen, director of business systems in Information Technology, was named Exempt Staff Person of the Year by Staff Council.
Ingrid Steele, senior academic evaluator in the Office of the Registrar, was named the Oral V. Hemry Non-Exempt Staff Person of the Year by Staff Council.

Windows 11 laptop update

A message from Information Technology: With summer fast approaching, we are preparing to update all SPU-managed devices to Windows 11, as Windows 10 will no longer be supported going into the next academic year. If your device has not yet been updated to Windows 11, we’ll need to connect with you as soon as possible to complete the update. Please review the following instructions based on your type of device:

Laptops
If you use a laptop, please schedule a time to drop it off at the IT Support Office (lower Marston) using the link below. The update typically takes about one hour, so choose a time when you won’t need your device during that period. .

Desktops
If you use a desktop, our office will contact you directly to arrange a time for a technician to come by and complete the update. This process should also take approximately one hour.

Non-Compatible Devices
Some older devices may not support Windows 11. If your device falls into this category, we’ll work with you to upgrade to a compatible model.

Important: Back Up Your Data
Before your device is updated, please ensure all files are backed up to OneDrive. Use the following checklist to prepare prior to you scheduled appointment:

The Faculty Status Committee is offering its annual File Building Workshop for next year’s tenure, promotion, and third-year review candidates on Thursday, May 22, 3–4:15 p.m. in Demaray 255. The file building session addresses the requirements and process for each type of review. Status committee members will field questions about and describe the documentation necessary for review. Pearl Leung, public policy senior manager at Amazon, is the next School of Business, Government, and Economics Dean’s Speaker on Tuesday, May 20, 9–10:30 a.m. in the Library Seminar Room (2nd floor). As usual, all are welcome, but space is limited, so faculty and staff wishing to attend should RSVP to cal@spu.edu.

Leung is head of local public policy for east King County to Eastern Washington, overseeing local advocacy strategies and policy initiatives in support of Amazon's presence in these regions. A recognized civic leader with 20 years of experience in public affairs, Leung has dedicated her work to building bridges at the intersections of urban growth and community development, focusing on affordable housing, transportation, economic development, and supporting the nonprofit sector. Her distinguished leadership and community impact earned recognition from the Puget Sound Business Journal as a "40 Under 40" honoree in 2020.
